General Summary:
The Perioperative Circulator RN is a critical member of the surgical team responsible for managing patient care throughout the intraoperative phase of surgery. This role requires clinical judgment, advanced assessment skills, and an understanding of the surgical environment to ensure patient safety and optimize outcomes during operative or other invasive procedures.
The Circulator RN functions independently while collaborating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth and safe operations.

This role requires clinical judgment, advanced assessment skills, and an understanding of the surgical environment to ensure patient safety and optimize outcomes during operative or other invasive procedures.
The Circulator RN functions independently while collaborating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth and safe operations.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct and indirect nursing care to patients undergoing surgical or invasive procedures.
- Utilize the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to develop and coordinate individualized care plans.
- Act as the patient’s advocate in the operating room, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
- Monitor and document all aspects of intraoperative care in accordance with facility policy and AORN standards.
- Collaborate with surgical team members to ensure procedural efficiency and continuity of care.
- Confirm appropriate supplies, equipment, and instruments are available and functioning before surgery begins.
- Participate in pre-operative briefings and post-operative debriefings to promote patient safety.
- Apply critical thinking skills to identify and respond to changes in a patient’s condition.
- Maintain compliance with all infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education & Credentials:
- Active RN License in [Insert State]
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (required)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Preferred (may be required depending on case mix)
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a Circulating RN in an acute operating room setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing theory, techniques, and AORN standards.
- Proven ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Familiarity with a wide range of surgical procedures and equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with colleagues and patients.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills.
- Organizational and time-management skills.
- Basic computer literacy (EMR use preferred).
Preferred Qualifications:
- CNOR certification
- Prior experience with EMR systems (e.g., EPIC, Cerner)
- Experience with specialty surgeries (e.g., ortho, neuro, cardiac, etc.)
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced surgical suite environment
- Physical demands may include prolonged standing, lifting surgical instruments, and assisting in patient transfers
- Use of PPE is required in accordance with infection control guidelines
