Schedule Notes:
- Day shift, 5x8, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Exempt position with no overtime.
- MUST have Emergency Department (ED) experience.
- Must have a Master’s degree.
Job Summary:
- Nurse Manager Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility for overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
- Responsibilities include oversight and direction for the emergency department and accountability for planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within the department.
- Foster an environment of collaboration and respect with all other healthcare team members.
- Weekend and holiday coverage as needed is also a responsibility of the Nurse Manager.
- Performs related duties as required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Performance:
- Develops long-term unit staffing schedules and ensures adequate daily coverage based on staffing needs.
- Develops measures and monitors unit operational performance metrics, including agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
- Oversees daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of employees in the department.
- Responsible for ongoing quality and performance improvement processes related to the emergency department.
- Promotes and supports a collaborative team approach in caring for all ED and trauma patients.
- Approaches others tactfully and treats all with respect and consideration.
- Supports and interprets hospital policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Monitors customer satisfaction scores and implements plans to improve them.
- Monitors patient volume, quality of care, and staff performance to identify areas for improvement.
- Maintains a departmental dashboard tracking progress on people, service, quality, and leadership.
- Investigates patient, physician, and staff complaints or concerns and works toward resolution.
- Maintains required competencies for self and all employees in the department.
- Participates in professional organizations.
- Collaborates with the CNO/SVP of nursing to establish nursing care standards and evaluates staff compliance.
- Identifies protocols affecting the patient population and keeps nursing staff informed.
- Demonstrates self-development and stays current on clinical management and healthcare topics.
- Maintains a safe, caring environment conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance.
- Ensures equal access to treatment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
- Participates in overall service planning.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings to discuss equipment, scheduling, goals, performance metrics, and improvement activities.
- Addresses any staff concerns during meetings.
- Educates and evaluates staff performance.
- Works with nursing leadership and Human Resources to counsel, discipline, and terminate staff as needed.
- Educates staff on new and existing department procedures and systems (e.g., information systems).
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing management and/or supervisory experience in the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrates leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent creativity and ideas to improve existing programs.
- Ability to determine appropriate action in complex situations.
- Ability to manage multiple simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize scheduling.
- Ability to complete work assignments accurately and timely.
- Ability to handle difficult situations professionally with patients, physicians, or others.
- Familiarity with services, processes, and ideas that impact this role and department.
