Program Overview WISH (Wayne Initiative for School Health)
The WISH Program provides integrated healthcare services to students throughout Wayne County Public Schools. The Nurse Practitioner will deliver primary care, preventive services, health education, and clinical leadership within school-based clinics, ensuring safe, high-quality, adolescent-focused care.
Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive clinical care, health promotion, and program support for school-based clinics within the WISH Program. This role includes direct patient care, preventive services, program performance oversight, interprofessional collaboration, and participation in policy and quality improvement efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Deliver high-quality patient care using nursing process and sound clinical judgment.
- Conduct comprehensive and focused health histories.
- Assess medical, psychosocial, cultural, genetic, and lifestyle factors impacting adolescent health.
- Perform physical examinations and evaluate patient health status.
- Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic and screening tests.
- Develop differential diagnoses and evidence-based care plans.
- Prescribe medications and initiate non-pharmacologic treatments.
- Provide health promotion, preventive care education, and anticipatory guidance tailored to adolescents.
- Document patient encounters, assessments, care plans, and clinical actions in the electronic health record.
Program and Operational Support
- Support WISH program goals, including student enrollment, physical examinations, and immunization targets.
- Participate in developing, reviewing, and implementing clinic policies.
- Contribute to quality and performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintain clinic readiness by ensuring adequate medical supplies and equipment functionality.
- Stay informed on best practices and emerging trends in adolescent medicine.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with the WISH Medical Director, nursing staff, school administrators, and community partners.
- Maintain professionalism and deliver high-quality customer service to students, families, and school personnel.
- Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Adapt to clinic scheduling needs aligned with the school calendar and clinic operations.
Required Qualifications
Education and Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current North Carolina Registered Nurse license and approval to practice as an NP through appropriate NC regulatory boards.
- Current BLS certification.
Experience
- Preferred: Two to three years of experience in adolescent care, pediatrics, school-based health, or related settings.
- Applicants with less experience but strong interest in adolescent health may also be considered.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of adolescent development and common adolescent health concerns.
- Ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with teenagers.
- Proficiency with electronic health records and basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to remain composed and professional in fast-paced or sensitive situations.
Additional Requirements
- If driving a Wayne Client vehicle, the candidate must be at least 21 years of age and have an approved driving record.
Work Environment
- Position is based within school health clinics across Wayne County Public Schools.
- Regular interaction with students, educators, healthcare professionals, and community partners.
- Operates under the policies, standards, and benefit structure of Client Health Wayne.
