Job Summary:

• Responsible and accountable for utilizing the nursing process in the provision of patient care.
• Operating Room Nurse is responsible for the planning, execution, conducting and evaluating both direct and indirect nursing care to surgical patients.
• The duties range from preoperative interventions to post-operative assessments that could help meet a patient’s need throughout the operative care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, cognitive, and cultural diversity of the patient.
• Determines mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition and adjusts plan of care, as appropriate.
• Responsible for supervising and directing patient care in the operating suite while ensuring proper techniques are used.
• Maintains count on sponges, needles and other instruments used in the operating room.
• Collaborates as appropriate with physician and other clinical disciplines in planning interventions to meet patient and family needs.
• Operating Room Nurse also serves as a scrub nurse when necessary.
• Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patients and families.
• Prepares the operative area, positions patient adjusts operative table.
• Evaluates and documents patient response to and outcome of care provided and revises plan of care accordingly.
• Ensures all supplies and equipment required are sterile and available for use.
• Observes any changes in the patient’s condition.
• Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Directs other staff when necessary, report any unusual occurrences to surgeon in charge.
• Ensures all medications are administered and charted.
• Ensures care of specimens are labeled and secured as per policy.

Required Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.

Preferred Education:

• Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

• New York State RN License.
• BLS required.

Required Skills & Experience:

• A minimum of 3+ years’ experience in an Operating Room setting.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and written.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Demands:

• Involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing and bending.
• May include some repetitive motions.
