Job Summary:
- The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who uses the Client nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response.
- The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition, and the competencies of the employee.
- This RN role covers hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24x7 staffing, including departments with on-call staffing during off shifts. Examples include GI Lab, Pain Management, Dialysis, Infusion Centers, and IV Services.
Essential Functions of the Role:
Clinical Judgment:
- Use clinical reasoning to conduct accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards.
- Identify and prioritize patient and family needs.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing plan of care. Modify the plan to meet clinical outcomes.
- Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, including nursing sensitive indicators.
- Support evidence-based practice changes through research and experiential learning.
- Participate in quality/performance improvement initiatives.
- Create a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff.
- Develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families, maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Manage emotional and physical pain to promote comfort, healing, and prevent unnecessary suffering.
- Recognize and incorporate patient/family unique differences (culture, spiritual beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, values) into individualized care plans.
- Preserve patient confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Create individualized plans reflecting patient and family values/goals.
- Identify and help resolve ethical and clinical concerns.
- Facilitate learning for patients, families, nursing staff, healthcare team, and community.
- Integrate education throughout care continuum to support informed decisions on health and treatments.
- Assess and document learning needs and outcomes.
- Work collaboratively and interdependently with colleagues and community to develop and implement integrated care plans.
- Delegate tasks and ensure timely follow-up.
- Use strategies and resources for problem-solving for patients, family, and staff.
- Consider safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in care planning and delivery.
- Improve nursing practice and work environment through shared governance and decision-making.
