Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare the OR for each case, tailoring room setup, equipment, implants, and medications to the patient’s age, allergies (e.g., latex), and planned procedure.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and manage supplies cost-effectively; reference preference cards and collaborate with the circulating RN when questions arise.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, sharps, and instruments every case, following policy 100% of the time.
- Label and handle specimens precisely per protocol.
- Scrub, gown, and glove promptly, facilitating instrument and sponge counts at shift start and when moving pans to decontamination.
- Inspect, clean, and care for instruments and equipment, report issues immediately.
- Set up back tables, medications, and supplies exactly to procedure and service-line standards.
- Operate sterilizers, read printouts, and document parameters to verify successful cycles.
- Complete room open-up/close-down duties and all unit-based competencies without more than five minor exceptions.
- Attend in-services and continuing education to sustain and expand clinical skills.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Proven scrub experience in a Pediatric OR (Preferred) with exposure to ENT, urology, neurosurgery, plastics, and general surgery cases.
- Expert knowledge of sterile technique and instrument processing.
- Ability to read preference cards and adapt quickly to surgeon or case changes.
- Competence in counting procedures, specimen handling, and basic equipment troubleshooting.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to all OR policies.
Certification Required:
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent (e.g., Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) from NCCT).
- BLS (AHA)
