Job Description: Specimen Technician I
Job Title: Specimen Technician I (SPT I)
Location: Lewisville, TX
Duration: 3+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM CST
Job Summary
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced, production-oriented laboratory environment. This role involves handling, processing, and tracking laboratory specimens with a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. The position requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general specimen processing functions such as:
- A-station processing
- Presorting specimens
- Specimen pickup and delivery to the laboratory
- Imaging/microfilming
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Enter data with high speed and accuracy (minimum 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour)
- Ensure all specimens are processed accurately and within established timelines
- Maintain compliance with laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements
- Learn and understand various specimen types and test requirements
- Adapt to daily changes in compliance regulations and workflow processes
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Follow all safety protocols, especially when working in a biohazard environment
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments
- Support departmental productivity and quality standards
- Be available for overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as needed
Work Environment & Requirements
- Production-driven laboratory setting with strict turnaround times
- Exposure to biohazard materials; adherence to safety standards required
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Night shift role with flexibility required to meet staffing needs
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer knowledge and data entry skills
- Ability to type at least 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic work environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Medical or healthcare-related background
- Experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting
- Experience in a production or high-volume environment
