Surgical Technologist

Shift: 7:00 PM 7:30 AM
Location: Rochester
Department: Labor & Delivery


Schedule:
3 days per week
12-hour shifts
1 week RTO allowed
Overtime billable after 48 hours




Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures. This role ensures a clear understanding of the assigned procedure, anticipates the needs of the surgical team, and provides patient support to maintain safety and comfort. The Surgical Technologist also responds to emergent situations in accordance with established procedures.




Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Scrub on general surgical procedures (Labor & Delivery cases).

  • Prepare the operating room by setting up instruments, equipment, and supplies according to the procedure.

  • Verify proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use; report repair needs as appropriate.

  • Follow departmental policies, quality assurance standards, safety protocols, environmental guidelines, and infection control procedures.

  • Demonstrate cost-consciousness when opening sterile supplies and handling instruments.

  • Respond to emergent situations per established protocols and notify appropriate personnel.

  • Deliver supplies to units and ancillary departments as needed.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized operating room environment.

  • Clean and restock rooms; return equipment and supplies to designated storage areas.

  • Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients while maintaining privacy and dignity.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and departmental information.

  • Assist the RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.

  • Assist leadership with supply par level adjustments for efficient inventory management.

  • Participate in department audits, task forces, and governance initiatives.

  • Complete required education and participate in ongoing departmental training.

  • May train and precept new Surgical Technologists within assigned core areas.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.




Education

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program




Certifications & Licensure

Required:

  • Current BLS certification (or obtained within one month of start date)

  • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) required

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience required




Skills & Experience

Required:

  • Physical ability to lift and move patients

  • Ability to push, pull, and lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment

  • Ability to work in a patient care environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and acute patient conditions

  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods

Preferred:

  • One year or more of Surgical Technologist experience
