Lab Assistant

Job Title: Lab Assistant
Duration: 6months 
Location: West Hills CA
Shift: Tues - Sat 12:30 AM - 09:00 AM (With rotational weekends. Flexibility required).
Pay Range : $21.25/hr - $24.34/hr

 

Job Summary:
The Laboratory Assistant performs routine and essential laboratory tasks to support the laboratory professional staff in the efficient operation of the laboratory. Duties include specimen handling, preparation of reagents and media, routine instrument maintenance, and general housekeeping to ensure a safe, clean, and productive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Specimen Handling and Processing:

    • Sort and receive specimens in the department.

    • Prepare specimens at workstations for testing, including:

      • Building worklists.

      • Aliquoting specimens into sample cups.

      • Checking specimens for clots and fibrin.

      • Inoculation and slide preparation.

  2. Instrument and Equipment Maintenance:

    • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.

    • Change gas cylinders as needed.

    • Perform weekly radioactive wipe tests.

  3. Laboratory Operations:

    • Centrifuge specimens and store/retrieve samples.

    • Prepare reagents and media for laboratory use.

    • Print extra labels for specimens when required.

    • Record data (temperature charts, specimen logs) and maintain department records.

  4. Quality Control and Assurance:

    • Perform Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) duties as assigned.

    • Resolve pending lists and locate missing samples.

  5. Safety and Cleanliness:

    • Decontaminate work areas and dispose of biohazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.

    • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and safety regulations.

  6. Administrative Support:

    • Use laboratory computer systems and operate PCs for data entry and recordkeeping.

    • Maintain files and records for the department.

    • Complete training and competency checklists as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Medical assistant training is a plus. Coursework in math and science preferred.

  • Experience: No previous experience required; training will be provided on the job.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently to maximize workstation productivity.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to retain information.

  • Ability to interact with coworkers and external customers professionally and respectfully.

  • Proficient in using computers and laboratory systems.
