Specimen Technician
Job Description: Specimen Technician I (SPT I)
Job Title: Specimen Technician I
Location: Irving, TX
Duration: 3+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift Timing: Monday – Friday, 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM CST
Shift Details: Night shift; weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime may be required based on staffing needs
Position Summary
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This role is critical to ensuring quality, compliance, and customer satisfaction. The position requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, production-driven laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general specimen processing support functions, including but not limited to:
- A-station operations
- Presort activities
- Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory
- Imaging and microfilming
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Accurately enter data with a requirement of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Learn and understand specimen types related to client-ordered tests
- Stay current with compliance and regulatory requirements related to test ordering, which may change daily
- Ensure all tasks are completed with accuracy, confidence, and within required turnaround times
- Maintain productivity and quality standards in a production-focused environment
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Follow all company core values, safety guidelines, and compliance policies
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to frequent changes in workload and procedures
- Foster a positive work environment through strong interpersonal skills
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in a biohazard laboratory environment while following proper safety practices
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Fast-paced production environment with strict productivity and quality expectations
Required Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Strong data entry and organizational skills
- Ability to learn laboratory specimen types and compliance regulations
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to frequent changes and customer demands
Experience
- No prior experience required
- Previous laboratory experience preferred
- Medical background preferred, including medical terminology related to clinical laboratories
- Prior hospital laboratory experience is a plus
- Experience in a production or manufacturing environment preferred
Additional Information
- This position is primarily night shift-based but requires flexibility for weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call coverage as needed.
