Pre-Analytical Assistant I
Job Location: Pittsburgh PA
Job Duration: 4+ months (Possible Extension)
Shift: M-F Rotating Saturdays 7PM - 3:30AM
Position Overview
The Pre-Analytical Assistant I provides general support within the Technical Operations Department. This role involves handling, processing, and transporting specimens while supporting compliance and operational standards. The position requires accuracy, timeliness, and teamwork to ensure smooth workflow in a high-volume laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities

Perform manual functions including:

Sorting and racking specimens
-
Pickup and delivery of specimens to the laboratory
-
Specimen storage (may include training to run sorters in archive mode)
-
Centrifugation and aliquoting
-
X-ray machine operation
-
Waste handling
-
Inventory management
-
-
Demonstrate understanding of specimen types and clinical department requirements regarding quantity, handling, and delivery.
-
Maintain accurate records and documentation, legible and within assigned time frames.
-
Identify and resolve problems related to specimen types, missing information, sorting, racking, centrifugation, delivery, and storage.

Learn and support all functions of Tech Ops and Specimen Processing for workflow efficiency and progression to higher-level responsibilities.

Support staffing needs including weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as required.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Job Accountabilities

Learn and perform assigned duties with confidence, accuracy, and timeliness.
-
Develop understanding of how all Technical Operations and Specimen Processing functions work together and impact result quality.

Understand compliance policies related to test ordering and demonstrate ability to research and verify test order information.
-
Meet quality and production standards within 6 months of completing training.
-
Report to work on time and follow attendance guidelines; support department performance during coworker absences.

Demonstrate teamwork, interpersonal skills, and flexibility in assignments.
Skills & Competencies

Minimal data entry skills and basic computer knowledge (familiarity with mainframes preferred).

Good organizational skills.

Understanding of clinical compliance regulations and specimen requirements.

Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced production environment.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to remain composed under pressure and exercise good judgment.

Adherence to safety, compliance, and workplace process policies (including 5S standards).

Physical capability to sit, stand, walk for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs., and maneuver large carts/racks.

Willingness to adapt to change and support continuous improvement.
Education & Experience
-
High School Diploma or GED (required).
