Specimen Technician
Job Description: Specimen Technician (SPT I)
Location: Lewisville, TX
Duration: 4+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Tuesday–Saturday, :3AM-11:30AM
Position Overview
The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides essential support to the Specimen Processing Department. This role involves a high level of accuracy, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment. The SPT I will handle various specimen-related tasks, ensure timely processing, and maintain compliance with regulatory guidelines that may change day-to-day. This position directly impacts turnaround time and overall customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department.
- Complete tasks including (but not limited to):
- A-station operations
- Presort activities
- Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the lab
- Imaging/microfilming
- Centrifugation
- Aliquoting
- Ensure all functions are completed with confidence, accuracy, and urgency.
- Develop an understanding of specimen types and associated testing requirements.
- Learn and adhere to compliance regulations related to test ordering.
- Adapt to frequent changes in daily tasks and workflow.
- Meet productivity and quality standards in a production-driven environment.
- Enter data efficiently with the ability to process 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour.
- Work safely in a biohazard environment and follow all safety policies.
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation.
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments.
- Demonstrate flexibility, positive attitude, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Support staffing needs, which may include weekends, holidays, oncall duties, and overtime.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Technical Skills:
- Basic computer literacy required
- Data entry background preferred
- Familiarity with laboratory testing or specimen processing is a plus

Work Experience:
- No prior experience required
- Previous laboratory or hospital lab experience preferred
- Medical background helpful, especially with laboratory terminology
- Experience in a production environment is an advantage
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Highvolume production setting with strict completion times.
- Exposure to biohazard materials—must follow all safety protocols.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Must demonstrate reliability, adaptability, and a commitment to quality.
