Vivarium Technician I

Job Title: Vivarium Technician/ Animal Care Technician
Location: San Diego, CA 92121
Duration: 2 months (Possibility of Extension)
Pay: $21.46 hourly
Schedule: Wed to Sun 5am or 6am start. 8 hour work day.

Duties:

• Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
• Check on animal health and room conditions daily
• Feed animals and provide fresh water
• Clean animal cages and housing areas
• Move animals to clean cages with fresh food, water, and bedding
• Wash cages, water bottles, and equipment by machine or by hand
• Separate young mice from their mothers (weaning)
• Dispose of waste properly following safety guidelines
• Keep all animal areas clean and odorfree to ensure animal comfort
• Work well with team members and communicate clearly

 
Skills:

• Stand and walk for most of the workday
• Lift and carry items up to 40 pounds safely
• Move heavy equipment using proper lifting techniques
• Use hands carefully when handling small animals and tools
• Perform repeated tasks like cleaning and feeding throughout the day
• Bend and reach to access cages at different heights
• See clearly to notice changes in how animals look and act
• You must be able to do these tasks safely in a busy research setting. You will wear the required safety gear including gloves, eye protection, and shoe covers at all times.
• Work in a laboratory setting
• Must always wear safety equipment
• Animal rooms can get warm (up to 80°F)

 
Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Requires good verbal and written communication skills.
• Exceptional organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
