Financial Counselor

One year of experience in healthcare/revenue cycle functions, case management, or social work is required.

Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience using Epic in a healthcare environment preferred.

Experience in social work or case management preferred.

High School diploma or equivalent is required.

Bachelor’s degree in social work, case management, healthcare administration, business administration, or other related field is preferred.

State of Wisconsin and Federal Certified Application Counselor Designation is required or must be obtained within 12 months after hire.

Assess patient financial needs and assist patients in accordance with Client’s Billing and Collection Policy.

Screen patients and assist with applications for governmental programs, health insurance exchange, and Client’s financial assistance program.

Initiate account resolution for self-pay patients and ensure payment sources are secured.

Counsel patients through the Medicaid, Victim of Crime, and Insurance Exchange application processes.

Assist patients with Financial Assistance applications per Client, Community Physicians, and Medical College of Wisconsin policies.

Calculate and collect patient deposits based on estimated costs of care.

Communicate with Social Services, Case Management, and physicians regarding unresolved patient financial issues.

Enforce patient accounting and compliance processes, ensuring required documents, insurance verification, and pre-certifications are complete.

Cross-train and provide backup coverage for other Financial Counselor roles, including evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Assist patients during open enrollment to apply for Qualified Health Plans and/or Insurance Affordability Programs.

Maintain compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations for Certified Application Counselors.

Stay current with policy and procedural updates related to Certified Application Counselors.
