Lab Assistant

Job Title: Lab Assistant
Location: Indianapolis IN
Duration: 6 Months 
Shift: Monday - Friday 3 am - 1:30 am


Job Summary

The Laboratory Assistant performs routine laboratory support functions with precision and accuracy to assist laboratory professionals and support overall production. Responsibilities include specimen handling, equipment maintenance, data recording, reagent preparation, and ensuring a clean and safe work environment.




Primary Responsibilities



Specimen Handling & Processing

  • Sort and receive incoming specimens.

  • Centrifuge specimens as required.

  • Prepare specimens for testing, including:

    • Building worklists

    • Aliquoting specimens into sample cups

    • Checking for clots and fibrin

    • Inoculation and slide preparation

  • Print extra labels as needed.

  • Locate missing samples and resolve pending lists.

  • Store and retrieve specimens appropriately.



Laboratory Support Tasks

  • Perform routine maintenance on designated laboratory instruments.

  • Prepare reagents and/or media.

  • Decontaminate and clean work areas.

  • Change laboratory gas cylinders.

  • Conduct weekly radioactive wipe tests.

  • Dispose of biohazardous material following safety procedures.

  • Maintain departmental files and records.

  • Record data, including temperature logs and charts.



Quality & Safety

  • Perform QA/QC duties as assigned.

  • Follow all PPE requirements and lab safety regulations.

  • Complete all required training and competency checklists.



Technology

  • Use the laboratory computer system and standard PCs for routine tasks and data entry.




Qualifications



Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.



Work Experience

  • No previous experience required.



Skills & Special Requirements

  • Ability to set priorities and handle multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Must retain information once learned and apply it consistently.

  • Ability to work respectfully and professionally with coworkers, internal staff, and external customers.
