Specimen Technician - 3rd Shift
Job Description: Specimen Technician I – 3rd Shift
Location: Miramar, FL
Duration: 4+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Monday–Friday, 9:00 PM – 5:30 AM
Position Overview
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) plays a critical role in supporting the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires strong data entry abilities, attention to detail, and the capability to perform repetitive tasks in a highvolume, fastpaced production environment. The SPT I is responsible for various specimen-related functions including Astation activities, presort, specimen pickup and delivery, centrifugation, aliquoting, and imaging/microfilming.
The ideal candidate demonstrates accuracy, adaptability, strong organizational skills, and the ability to understand specimen types, test requirements, and compliance standards that may change daily. This role is essential for maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general specimen processing tasks including Astation duties, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, and imaging/microfilming.
- Ensure accurate and timely entry of specimen information (minimum 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour).
- Transport processed specimens within the laboratory as required.
- Work efficiently to meet departmental productivity, quality standards, and completion times.
- Understand various specimen types and associated test orders.
- Adapt to frequently changing procedures, priorities, and compliance regulations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Communicate professionally with staff at all levels.
- Follow all safety protocols while working in a biohazard environment, including wearing PPE such as lab coat, gloves, mask, and goggles.
- Demonstrate flexibility to support staffing needs, including weekends, holidays, oncall duties, and overtime when required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Data Entry Ability: Demonstrated capability to enter at least 6,000 keystrokes/hour.
- Computer Skills: Basic computer proficiency required.

Language Skills:
- Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written) required
- Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
- Transportation: Must have reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license (rideshares/bus not acceptable).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory experience or background in a medical environment.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, especially related to clinical lab testing.
- Experience working in a production-driven environment.
- Prior hospital lab exposure is a plus.
Work Environment
- Highvolume production environment with repetitive tasks.
- Extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Biohazard exposure requiring strict adherence to safety practices.
- Fast-paced, constantly changing setting requiring adaptability and strong organizational skills.
Attendance Requirements
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to complete full scheduled shifts.
- Excessive absenteeism or tardiness will result in termination.
