Specimen Technician
Title: Specimen Processor I (SPT I)
Location: Tampa, FL
Duration: 3+ months (Temp-to-Hire)
Shift: Monday – Friday, 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM (Overnight)
Overview:
The Specimen Processor I (SPT I) provides general support in the Specimen Processing Department, performing specimen handling, data entry, and sample preparation. This role requires accuracy, organization, and flexibility in a fast-paced, production-driven environment while ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:

Sort, receive, and deliver specimens within the laboratory

Perform data entry with ability to maintain 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour

Carry out specimen processing functions including centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, and imaging/microfilming

Prepare specimens at workstations for testing (including worklists, clot checks, inoculation, slide preparation)

Adhere to compliance regulations related to specimen handling and test ordering

Maintain productivity and quality standards to meet departmental deadlines

Practice strict safety protocols when handling biohazardous materials

Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas

Demonstrate flexibility to work weekends, holidays, on-call, or overtime as needed
Education:
-
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Experience & Knowledge:
-
Previous laboratory or hospital lab experience (preferred)
-
Medical background and knowledge of terminology (preferred)

Experience in production environments (preferred)

Basic computer knowledge required; ability to adapt to lab systems
Skills & Requirements:

Excellent understanding of English, both spoken and written (required)

Strong organization and multitasking skills in a fast-paced, high-volume setting

Effective communication with team members and supervisors

Consistent punctuality and attendance required; excessive absenteeism not tolerated

Ability to sit or stand for long periods and wear required PPE (lab coat, gloves, goggles, mask)
