Specimen Technician

Title: Specimen Processor I (SPT I)
Location: Tampa, FL
Duration: 3+ months (Temp-to-Hire)
Shift: Monday – Friday, 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM (Overnight)

The Specimen Processor I (SPT I) provides general support in the Specimen Processing Department, performing specimen handling, data entry, and sample preparation. This role requires accuracy, organization, and flexibility in a fast-paced, production-driven environment while ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards.

• Sort, receive, and deliver specimens within the laboratory

• Perform data entry with ability to maintain 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour

• Carry out specimen processing functions including centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, and imaging/microfilming

• Prepare specimens at workstations for testing (including worklists, clot checks, inoculation, slide preparation)

• Adhere to compliance regulations related to specimen handling and test ordering

• Maintain productivity and quality standards to meet departmental deadlines

• Practice strict safety protocols when handling biohazardous materials

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas

• Demonstrate flexibility to work weekends, holidays, on-call, or overtime as needed

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)

• Previous laboratory or hospital lab experience (preferred)

• Medical background and knowledge of terminology (preferred)

• Experience in production environments (preferred)

• Basic computer knowledge required; ability to adapt to lab systems

• Excellent understanding of English, both spoken and written (required)

• Strong organization and multitasking skills in a fast-paced, high-volume setting

• Effective communication with team members and supervisors

• Consistent punctuality and attendance required; excessive absenteeism not tolerated

• Ability to sit or stand for long periods and wear required PPE (lab coat, gloves, goggles, mask)
