Administrative Considerations:
- Clients Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) is the umbrella term for the activity among agencies with criminal justice responsibilities to bring greater cohesion and effectiveness by improving the way they communicate and share information across system components, and how they manage data on crime and criminal offenders.
- As part of ongoing CISS initiatives, CJIS is expanding into building a product called CISS Analytics as per the CISS legislation. The key purpose of the CISS Analytics is for the CJIS Analytics sub-committee to utilize it to help make changes in laws and policies to serve the interests of residents and relevant state agencies.
- To support this effort, CJIS seeks a Data Scientist who can transform data into actionable insights and scalable machine learning solutions.
- You will work cross-functionally with CJIS SQL DBA, Business, Source data owners, and the Analytics sub-committee teams to solve complex problems and create data that would be used for informed decision-making.
Product of Work:
- The Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Data Scientist is a position required based on uncovered needs while working with the CJIS Analytics Subcommittee.
- This position will be responsible for delivering measurable impact through data-driven initiatives, deploying reliable models that improve business KPIs, providing clear, actionable recommendations to the subcommittee, and contributing towards building a scalable data science infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assist users to translate business challenges into data science problems and analytical solutions
- Collect, clean, and pre-process large structured and unstructured datasets
- Assist to develop, validate, and deploy machine learning models
- Assist to perform statistical analysis and hypothesis testing
- Assist in designing and analyzing A/B experiments
- Assist in building predictive and prescriptive models
- Communicate insights clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Collaborate with data engineers to produce models
- Assist in monitoring model performance and retrain as necessary
- Contribute to data science best practices and documentation
Required Qualifications:
Data Scientist
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or machine learning (adjust based on level)
- Strong proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn)
- Experience with SQL and relational databases
- Solid understanding of statistics and probability
- Experience building and validating ML models (classification, regression, clustering and neural networks)
- Experience working with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)
- Experience working with large datasets
Required Skills/Experience:
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure)
- Knowledge of MLOps tools (MLflow, Airflow, Docker)
- Experience deploying models into various SDLC environments
- Domain experience in Criminal Justice Agencies would be a plus
- Strong problem solving and analytical thinking
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Ability to translate complex results into business insights
- Self-starter with strong ownership mindset
- Collaborative and team-oriented
Administrative Considerations:
- Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM - Includes teleworking but attending in-person meetings when needed.
- State Resources and Oversight : Workstation and supervision by CJIS Program Manager
- Security/Privacy Considerations : Pass Background Investigation, sign confidentiality statement
- General Miscellaneous: All work product property of the CJIS Governing Board. Travel not included.
