FINANCIAL COUNSELOR
Job Title: Financial Counselor
Location: West Bend, WI 53095
Duration: 01/30/2026 – 07/30/2026
Schedule Notes: 8:00am–4:30pm Monday–Friday (training 2x weekly at main campus for 4–6 weeks) | Weekends Required: No | On Call Required: No | Float Position: No
Schedule: 5 days per week, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
Work Setting: Hospital – Patient Financial Services
Requirements
Required Skills & Experience:
-
Minimum one (1) year of experience in healthcare or revenue cycle functions, business office operations, case management, or social work.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
-
Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software programs.
-
Experience using Epic in a healthcare environment.
-
Experience in social work or case management.
Education Requirements:
-
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in social work, case management, healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field.
Preferred Certifications & Licensure:
-
State of Wisconsin and Federal Certified Application Counselor designation.
-
In lieu of Certified Application Counselor designation, current Licensed Health Insurance Agent.
Job Summary
-
Initiates timely account resolution activities for self-pay patients or those claiming financial hardship to support continuation of elective patient care.

Monitors and reviews Financial Counselor work queues to ensure completion of patient financial activities and timely resolution of account balances.

Updates patient accounting systems in accordance with Patient Financial Services policies and procedures.

Counsels patients through application and eligibility processes for Medicaid, Victim of Crime programs, Insurance Exchange, and other available resources.

Assists patients with Financial Assistance applications according to established policies.

Collects patient deposits based on ability to pay and urgency of medical need and provides cost estimates as required.

Communicates with Social Services, Case Management, Admitting/Registration, departments, and physicians to resolve patient financial issues.

Ensures compliance with patient accounting processes, insurance verification, and precertification requirements.

Cross-trains and provides backup coverage as needed, including PM shifts, weekends, or holidays.

Assists patients during open enrollment for Qualified Health Plans and Insurance Affordability Programs.

Adheres to document storage, destruction policies, and all applicable state, federal, and organizational regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned.
