Duties:
Under minimal supervision, performs specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as requested by a
physician to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to
provide care appropriate to the population of the patients served on his/her unit. Medical MRI technologists, ,
utilize magnetic resonance imaging scanners to capture specific images ordered by a physician to aid in patient
diagnosis. CT technologists, utilize ionizing radiation computed tomography scanners to capture specific images
ordered by a physician to aid in patient diagnosis. MRI/CT techs must be able to closely follow a physician s
instructions, prepare and operate equipment, position patients correctly and effectively record the requested
diagnostic images. Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills:
1. Performs at least two separate modalities in Imaging to include Computed Tomography (CT) and
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the following areas to include but not limited to: cardiac, neuro,
abdominal, chest, spine, and extremities.
2. Transports patients by stretcher, bed, wheelchair, or walking. Provides care for patients during
transportation and within the department, if necessary.
3. Assists patients by lifting and moving them off and on the imaging table. Provides bedpans and urinals as
needed. Assures that patients are properly dressed for procedures.
4. Prepares patient for their exam by consenting, explaining exam and answering patient questions.
5. Administers contrast and other preparations as to complete exam safely and in a timely fashion.
6. Cares for patient during procedures by assisting them to rest rooms, providing blankets, etc.
7. Assists with emergency medical treatment under physician direction.
8. Pulls contrast per protocol and documents contrast in EMAR per protocol.
9. Is competent in loading and operating the power injector for contrast studies.
10. Technologist may give contrast medias and may flush lines with normal saline.
11. Starts IV s for procedures as ordered, per policy.
12. Under direct supervision of the Radiologist, the technologist may pull Xylocaine for procedure.
13. Performs data entry in computer systems necessary for work flow and patient care, such as: ITS, Meditech,
PACS, EMAR and Pyxis.
14. Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting others, and special
assignments.
15. Keeps work area clean and organized.
16. Monitors patient condition pre and post-procedure and reports changes in the patient's condition to the
Radiologist, Cardiologist, or RN for follow-up.
17. Skillfully operates all MR and CT systems to comply with all equipment specification.
18. Is proficient on 3D software and can perform post processing reconstructions for MRI and CT exams.
19. Demonstrates proficiency in confirming patient demographics and obtaining adequate patient history prior
to beginning a procedure.
20. Practices infection control (disinfection) with all procedures and hand-washing before and after each
patient.
21. Knows procedure for the release of patients.
22. Accurately charges all procedures, supplies, and non-billable items by the end of the work shift.
23. Identifies cross section anatomy and uses appropriate protocols for parts examined.
24. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of CT and MRI patient monitoring systems.
25. Assists physicians with complex procedures and records pertinent information.
26. Orders and maintains the department order of supplies.
27. Reports equipment malfunctions for repair
28. Correctly screens individuals for MRI and CT procedures for patient safety. Can define safety issues in
MRI and CT.
29. Can access websites/resources to determine compatibility of implanted devices for MRI patient safety.
30. Knows patient pregnancy policy for MRI and CT.
31. Knows when and how to use emergency power shut down and quench buttons on all MRI equipment.
