Specimen Technician
Job Title: Specimen Technician (SPT I)
Location: Irving, TX
Duration: 3+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Sunday–Thursday | 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Job Summary
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for performing general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a highvolume production environment. The SPT I must perform all tasks with accuracy, confidence, and a commitment to maintaining quality standards that support customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform specimen processing tasks including Astation, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
- Accurately perform data entry with the ability to meet productivity requirements (6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour).
- Identify and understand various specimen types and the corresponding tests ordered.
- Learn and stay up to date on test-order compliance regulations, which may change frequently.
- Adhere to productivity, quality, and departmental turnaround time standards.
- Work safely in a biohazard environment and follow proper safety and compliance procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Communicate effectively with team members and staff at all levels.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills that promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Adapt to frequent changes in workload, procedures, and departmental priorities.
- Work weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts as required by staffing needs.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Productionfocused laboratory environment.
- Extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Biohazard exposure; required to follow strict safety protocols.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory or clinical setting experience.
- Medical background, including familiarity with medical terminology.
- Experience in a production or high-volume data entry environment.
- Prior hospital laboratory experience is a plus.
