Job Description:
- Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) – Job Description.
- The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides essential operational support within the Specimen Processing Department in a high-volume, production-driven laboratory environment.
- This role is critical to maintaining specimen integrity, accuracy, and timely delivery to ensure quality results and customer satisfaction.
- The SPT I performs a variety of specimen processing and data entry functions with a strong emphasis on accuracy, organization, compliance, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform general specimen processing support functions, including A-station operations, presort activities, centrifugation, aliquoting, and specimen imaging/microfilming.
- Receive, verify, accession, and process specimens accurately according to test orders and client requirements.
- Enter high-volume data with speed and accuracy, maintaining productivity standards of up to 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Transport, pick up, and deliver processed specimens to appropriate laboratory departments in a timely manner.
- Maintain a strong understanding of specimen types, test requirements, and processing workflows.
- Adhere to all regulatory, compliance, and safety requirements related to specimen handling and test ordering, including frequent updates and changes.
- Work efficiently in a biohazard environment while practicing proper infection control and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, supervisors, and cross-functional teams to support workflow efficiency.
- Demonstrate flexibility in work assignments, including night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call coverage as needed.
Work Environment & Expectations:
- Fast-paced, production-based laboratory environment with strict quality and turnaround time standards.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while performing repetitive tasks.
- Exposure to biohazardous materials while following established safety protocols.
- Frequent changes in workload, priorities, and compliance requirements requiring adaptability and flexibility.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
Required Knowledge & Skills:
- Basic computer proficiency with strong data entry skills.
- Ability to learn and apply laboratory specimen processing procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to frequent changes in workflow and regulations.
Preferred Experience:
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience.
- Medical background with knowledge of medical terminology.
- Prior hospital laboratory or production environment experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Experience in specimen processing (required).
- Influenza (FLU) vaccination (required).
- Hospital credentials (required).
