Specimen Technician
Job Description: Specimen Technician I (SPT I)
Location: Lewisville, TX
Duration: 4+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Tuesday to Saturday | 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Position Summary
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced, production-oriented laboratory environment. This role involves handling, processing, and preparing specimens for testing while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely completion of tasks. The position is critical to maintaining quality standards and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine specimen processing tasks including:
- A-station support
- Pre-sorting of specimens
- Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory
- Imaging/microfilming
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Ensure all tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and within established turnaround times
- Maintain strict adherence to safety, quality, and compliance standards in a biohazard environment
- Accurately perform data entry with a minimum typing speed of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour
- Understand and identify specimen types related to test orders
- Stay updated on and comply with frequently changing test ordering regulations
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Demonstrate strong communication skills across all organizational levels
- Adapt to changing priorities and workload demands with flexibility
Work Environment & Requirements
- Fast-paced, production-focused laboratory setting
- Exposure to biohazard materials; adherence to safety protocols required
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Availability for weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts as needed
- High level of flexibility to adjust to daily operational changes and customer demands
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Strong data entry and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing
- Medical background or familiarity with clinical laboratory terminology
- Previous experience in a hospital or laboratory environment
- Experience working in a production-based setting
