Basic Purpose:
Pre-Analytical Assistant I is responsible for general support functions within the Technical Operations Department.
Position Requirements:
- Minimal data entry skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Understanding of specimen types related to test(s) ordered.
- Knowledge of clinical department requirements regarding specimen types and quantity needed for each test, specimen handling, and delivery.
- Understanding of compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to change and pursue continuous improvement.
- Commitment to fulfilling internal and external customer requirements while carrying out routine position responsibilities.
- Willingness to actively contribute to a team-based working environment.
- Ability and willingness to support department goals regarding staffing needs on weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.
- Tasks and responsibilities must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner.
- Sorting
- Racking
- Pickup and delivery of specimens to the laboratory
- Specimen storage (this position might also be trained to run the sorters in archive mode)
- Centrifugation
- Aliquoting
Job Accountabilities:
- Demonstrates ability to learn the duties assigned and develops understanding of how functions in Tech Ops and Specimen Processing work together, impacting Technical departments and result quality.
- Identifies problems with specimen types, missing information, etc., related to sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage of specimens; resolves or forwards information for timely problem resolution.
- Understands compliance policies related to test ordering, researching test order information on translation tables, computer systems, and directory of services.
- Meets quality and production standards within 6 months of completing training.
- Completes all required written documentation clearly, legibly, and within assigned time frames.
- Reports to work on time and follows attendance guidelines; supports the department during coworker absences.
- Learns additional functions within Tech Ops and Specimen Processing to enable progression to the next level.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements/Environment:
- Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and works in a production environment.
- Communicates effectively with all levels of staff, verbally and in writing.

- Demonstrates good judgment when resolving problems.

- Works in a biohazard environment, following all applicable safety requirements.
- Maintains a neat and clean work area; complies with 5S workplace standards.
- Able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; able to lift up to 50 lbs.; able to maneuver large carts and/or racks with specimens.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive working environment.
- Shows flexibility with work assignments and ability to adapt to change.
- Must have some flexibility regarding work schedule.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Medical background preferred, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
- Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
- Familiarity with mainframe computers preferred.
Additional Job Details:
- Candidate must have reliable transportation to get to/from worksite without issue (bus, Uber, rideshare is not reliable transportation).
- Must be available to work as scheduled, BE ON TIME, and stay for the entire shift. Excessive absenteeism/tardiness will be cause for termination.
- Heavy production site; very busy with repetitive tasks. Medical terminology is a plus but not required.
- If handling testing samples, personal protective equipment (lab coat, mask, goggles, gloves, etc.) is required.
- MUST HAVE EXCELLENT UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, BOTH SPOKEN AND WRITTEN.
