Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Clinical Laboratory to lead operations at a small-to-medium complexity hospital laboratory in York, Maine. This is not an entry-level leadership role. The ideal candidate is a seasoned, strategic leader with exceptional soft skills and a proven track record in laboratory management.

Following a recent successful CAP inspection and reaccreditation, the team is experiencing heightened sensitivity due to external environmental pressures affecting the broader hospital system. We require a strong, empathetic communicator who is passionate about employee engagement, fostering trust, and maintaining high-quality clinical standards.




Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., CLIA, CAP, AABB).

  • Supervise all laboratory personnel, ensuring competence, licensure, and high performance.

  • Foster a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with hospital administration and other departments to support optimal patient care.

  • Prepare and manage the department s operational, personnel, and capital budgets.

  • Promote team engagement through transparent communication and proactive leadership.

  • Provide direction for performance improvement initiatives and ensure timely corrective actions.

  • Ensure 24/7 functionality and readiness of laboratory services.




Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    Bachelor s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related field.

  • Certification:
    Active registration with ASCP or equivalent certification body.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years of experience managing a hospital-based clinical laboratory.

    • Previous oversight of CAP or similar accreditation surveys strongly preferred.

  • In-depth knowledge of acute care clinical laboratory operations.

  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

  • Skilled in managing staff through periods of change or uncertainty.

  • Proficient in conflict resolution, staff development, and team building.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and maintain service excellence.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for 4 6 hours and walk for up to 2 hours daily.

  • Light to moderate physical work: lift/carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and use of hands/fingers
