The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides operational support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role focuses on accurate data entry, specimen handling, and adherence to laboratory compliance and quality standards. The position operates in a fast-paced, production-driven environment, requiring attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to learn changing regulations.

Job Summary:
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides operational support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role focuses on accurate data entry, specimen handling, and adherence to laboratory compliance and quality standards. The position operates in a fast-paced, production-driven environment, requiring attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to learn changing regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen processing tasks including:
- A-station operations
- Presorting
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Imaging/microfilming
- Specimen pickup and delivery
- Accurately enter and verify specimen data (minimum 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour)
- Ensure proper identification, handling, and processing of specimens based on test orders and specimen types
- Maintain compliance with laboratory regulations and test-ordering requirements
- Meet productivity, quality, and departmental turnaround time standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in a biohazard environment
- Follow all safety, compliance, and quality assurance policies and procedures
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, supervisors, and other departments
- Demonstrate flexibility with workload, scheduling, and process changes
- Support customer satisfaction through accuracy, timeliness, and quality performance
Work Environment & Schedule:
- Production-based laboratory environment with strict productivity and quality standards
- Majority of shifts are night shift
- Availability required for weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call assignments based on staffing needs
- Exposure to biohazard materials; adherence to safety protocols is required
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Strong data entry and keyboarding skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to learn and apply laboratory specimen types and test requirements
- Adaptability to frequent changes in processes and regulations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to core values, compliance, and safety standards
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
Knowledge & Experience:
- Basic computer skills (required)
- Knowledge of laboratory testing and/or specimen processing (preferred)
- Medical background with clinical laboratory terminology (preferred)
- Previous laboratory, hospital laboratory, or production environment experience (preferred but not required)
- No prior experience required
