Position Summary
- The Distribution Design Technician (DDT) supports the design, coordination, and execution of distribution system construction and maintenance projects.
- The role involves processing work requests in the Work Management System (WMS), meeting with customers, preparing technical designs and cost estimates, securing necessary permits, and coordinating across internal departments to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and in compliance with company standards.

Customer and Project Coordination
- Meet with customers and/or their representatives to assess new construction projects, load additions, and feasibility.
- Determine project schedules, target completion dates, and communicate updates to all stakeholders.
- Document communications through letters and emails when project changes occur.
- Process and manage work requests (WRs) in WMS, dividing jobs into appropriate phases/crews (overhead, underground, service, conduit).
- Maintain work status updates and project details in WMS for all related requests.
- Review financial data in WMS to ensure proper coding of activities and compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements (Capital vs. O&M classification).
- Perform technical calculations to determine safe, economical, and reliable solutions for customers and the distribution system.
- Estimate electrical loads (50 kW).
- Conduct field measurements (span distances, conductor height/sizes) and model designs in applications such as PoleForeman.
- Use GIS to design and document proposed and existing electrical assets, ensuring correct connectivity, structures, and compatible units (CUs).
- Resolve GIS errors, ensure task types are linked to WMS, and upload data.
- Produce construction prints for Field Construction, Operations, and contractors, verifying accuracy of equipment and third-party utilities.
- Determine Maintenance-of-Traffic (MOT) plan requirements for work in right-of-way areas.
- Perform visual and physical inspections of company equipment to assess need for replacement or upgrade.
- Upon training completion, access and inspect energized equipment and install current/voltage recording devices (RVMs).
- Troubleshoot customer voltage complaints using appropriate tools, install and analyze voltage monitoring devices, and recommend solutions.
- Review GIS construction prints for accuracy and clarity.
- Interpret and analyze design plans for government projects (road widening, intersection improvements, utility relocations).
- Coordinate with DOT, municipalities, counties, contractors, and other utilities on infrastructure modifications.
- Engineer relocations of company facilities, prepare design drawings, and create related work requests.
- Estimate economic impact of relocations on the company and external agencies.
- Lead moderately complex projects with limited supervision.
- Produce budget estimates and PSA (Project Scope Approval) estimates for capital projects (> $500,000).
- Provide leadership and project management for large-scale developments (multi-parcel residential, commercial, schools, malls, retail).
- Negotiate with external survey crews for complex road projects.
- Mentor junior Distribution Design Technicians and provide training to other departments.
- Investigate, document, and respond to Public Service Commission inquiries.
Qualifications
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED.
- Preferred: College degree or relevant technical certification(s).
- Required: Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record. (Florida license required within 30 days of residency, if applicable.)

Required:
- At least 1 year of experience as a Distribution Design Technician Associate; OR
- 2 years of equivalent distribution design experience with another utility or approved consultant; OR
- 2 years combined internal/external distribution design experience.
- Experience accessing and inspecting energized equipment and installing RVM devices for troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated proficiency as a Distribution Design Technician Associate with potential to assume greater responsibility.
- Strong project management and leadership skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective communication skills with ability to coordinate across departments and external stakeholders.
- Ability to analyze technical data, produce accurate designs, and resolve complex field issues.
- Adaptability to shifting priorities and changing project requirements.
