Medical Laboratory Scientist
Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Clifton, NJ
Duration: 6 Months
Shift: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities:
-
Follow procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, result reporting, and maintaining patient records.

Maintain records showing proficiency testing samples are handled like patient specimens.

Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (refer to department SOPs).
-
Review and release test results.
-
Ensure compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and lab safety protocols.

Document all quality control (QC) activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
-
Adhere to procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.

Identify and resolve test performance issues or notify a senior technologist/supervisor.

Document corrective actions for any test system deviations.

Report STAT and critical results per department procedures.
-
Address questions from clients or lab personnel as applicable.

Maintain comprehensive testing records.

Ensure the department is kept clean and orderly.

Label reagents/test kits with received dates, expiration dates, and opened dates (if applicable).

Train on and review new procedures.

Attend monthly department meetings and training sessions.
-
Participate in all required safety training. Know safety protocols and equipment.

Assist in inspections by government or regulatory agencies when needed.

Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
-
Solid understanding of laboratory testing procedures.
-
Proficiency in using multiple computer systems.
-
Familiarity with Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures.
-
Knowledge of all laboratory departments and functions.
Education Requirements:
-
Preferred: BS in Medical Technology
-
Acceptable Alternatives:
-
BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology
-
Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
-
Previously qualified under 42 CFR 493.1433 (published March 14, 1990)

Credential Requirements:
-
Foreign-Educated Candidates: Credential evaluation by IERF
-
U.S.-Educated Candidates: Original transcript required
-
Certification: National certification (MT/MLT) from ASCP or AMT preferred or eligibility required
Experience:
-
Minimum 1 year of clinical lab experience performing high complexity testing (preferred)

For candidates with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology: Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in high complexity testing

National and state licensure as required
Special Requirements:

Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks.

Must coordinate with other departments.

Customer service skills for potential client interaction.

Strict adherence to patient confidentiality policies.
