JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Tech First Assistant works in a dual role as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and a First Assistant. This position assists surgeons and surgical teams during major surgical services and complex surgical procedures. It functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse when performing the role of CST, and under the direction of a Surgeon when performing the role of First Assistant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensure appropriate supplies, equipment, and instrumentation are available and functioning properly for each procedure.

Create, correct, and update surgeon preference cards.

Set up surgical cases and prepare the OR.

Coordinate specialty equipment and instrument tray needs.

Perform sterilization preparation and quality checks.

Scrub for major surgical services requiring advanced knowledge of anatomy and instruments.

Educate and prepare surgical teams according to procedures.

Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping.

Provide intraoperative support including passing instruments, holding retractors, tying off vessels, repairing incisions, cauterizing, stabilizing drains, and applying dressings.

Perform complex surgical techniques under surgeon direction within Texas scope of practice.

Manage specimens, collaborate with pharmacy and vendors, and requisition supplies.

Stay current on surgical trends and techniques, act as a preceptor, and support training and mentoring.
