Job Title: Hospital Specimen Technician
Job Location: Chicago, IL
Job Duration: 3+ months (possible extension)
Shift: Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM
Rotating weekends (Saturday 9:00 AM–3:00 PM)
Training shift: 12:00 PM–8:30 PM
Pay rate: $17.20/hr. on W2
Role Summary
The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for preparing and processing patient specimens in a hospital setting for client laboratory testing. The role requires accurate and timely completion of all pre-analytical processing procedures while ensuring compliance with hospital and laboratory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Processing & Test Send-Out
- Follow test ordering policies, hospital processing procedures, and specimen requirements
- Perform specimen preparation and send-out procedures accurately and on time
- Use and maintain knowledge of the hospital Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Print laboratory test reports as required
- Track and interpret specimen flow using reporting tools and systems
- Manage supply ordering processes
- Perform remote accessioning (pre-accessioning)
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and laboratory standards
Problem Resolution
- Troubleshoot issues related to:
- Specimen types and quality
- Missing or incomplete information
- Test in question (TIQ)
- Test not performed (TNP)
- Additional sample requests
- Other client-related issues
Customer Service
- Serve as liaison between hospital staff and client laboratory
- Provide proactive and professional customer support
- Handle inbound calls with strong communication and professionalism
- Communicate effectively with hospital laboratory staff, sales teams, and internal departments
- Resolve issues related to testing, cancellations, specimen requirements, and billing
Required Experience
- 1–3 years of relevant work experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Preferred Experience
- Medical or clinical laboratory background
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Prior hospital laboratory experience
Skills & Competencies
- High-volume data entry (up to 6,000 keystrokes/hour)
- Strong multitasking in a fast-paced production environment
- Experience with LIS systems (preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Problem-solving and decision-making ability
- Ability to remain calm under pressure
- Flexibility and adaptability to change
- Good judgment in handling operational issues
