Forensic Scientist I

Title: Forensic Scientist I
Location: Lenexa, KS
Duration: 3 months (temp to hire)
Shift: Tuesday to Saturday 6:00pm to 2:30am




Overview:

The Forensic Scientist I works within the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and is responsible for confirmation testing of donor specimens, including preparation, extraction, and instrument operation. This role reports to the Department Supervisor and follows guidance from the Supervisor and/or Group Lead, contributing to the accuracy and reliability of forensic toxicology testing.




Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain chain of custody of forensic specimens and follow proper sample handling procedures

  • Follow departmental SOPs and maintain competency in reagent prep, calibrators, QC samples, analytical techniques, and instrument operation

  • Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and operate instruments used in sample analysis

  • Review data at a basic level and complete documentation legibly and thoroughly

  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and in compliance with quality standards

  • Document temperature checks for temperature-dependent equipment

  • Participate in method/instrument validation studies and validation of new calibrators and analytical procedures

  • Meet productivity and quality expectations; report equipment or workflow issues to Supervisor or Group Lead

  • Complete all required quality control and assurance documentation

  • Follow work schedules and company/departmental policies

  • Complete assigned continuing education and competency verification activities

  • Maintain a professional and collaborative work environment

  • Perform other duties as assigned




Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical Technology (preferred)

  • Alternative majors acceptable with:

    • At least 16 semester hours in Chemistry (including 6 hours of inorganic chemistry)

    • 16 semester hours in Biology relevant to medical sciences

    • 3 semester hours in Mathematics




Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience 

  • Familiarity with laboratory methods and procedures

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds

  • Strong systems knowledge and data analysis skills
