Specimen Technician
Job Title: Specimen Technician (SPT I)
Location: Baltimore, MD
Duration: 7 Months
Shift: Monday – Friday, 8:00 PM – 4:30 AM
Position Overview
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides essential support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role primarily involves data entry and specimen handling duties that require accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to compliance standards. The position is vital to ensuring customer satisfaction through quality and timely specimen processing.
Key Responsibilities

Perform general specimen processing tasks including:

A-station duties
-
Presorting specimens
-
Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory

Imaging/microfilming
-
Centrifugation and aliquoting
-

Maintain confidence, accuracy, and timeliness in all tasks.

Organize and manage multiple specimen types and related test orders.

Understand and comply with changing test ordering regulations and client requirements.

Adapt flexibly to daily changes and varied customer demands.

Work primarily night shifts but remain available for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as staffing requires.

Operate in a production-focused environment with an emphasis on productivity, quality, and meeting completion deadlines.

Enter data efficiently, targeting approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.

Follow biohazard safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Communicate effectively with team members at all levels.

Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and foster a positive work environment.
Requirements
Education:
-
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Knowledge & Skills:
-
Basic computer skills required.
-
Preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen processing.
-
Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
-
Ability to work in a fast-paced, production environment.

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
Experience:
-
No prior experience required; laboratory or production environment experience preferred.
-
Previous medical or hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not mandatory.
