Summary:
The Grossing Technician is responsible for performing routine and non-routine gross examination, dissection, and preparation of surgical tissue specimens for histologic processing. This role ensures accurate specimen handling, labeling, and documentation in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and corporate quality standards while maintaining specimen integrity and workflow efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (A.A., A.S., B.A., or B.S.) in Biology, Histology, or related field, or equivalent training and experience.

3 months to 1 year of histology or surgical grossing experience preferred.

Must meet requirements under CLIA CFR 493.1489 and the company’s Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical tissue specimens following established laboratory protocols and safety guidelines.

Ensure accurate accessioning, labeling, and identification of all specimens to maintain traceability and patient safety.

Describe gross anatomic features of uncomplicated surgical specimens, noting all relevant markings, lesions, and measurements.

Record and document measurements, weights, volumes, and abnormalities as required.

Escalate complex or non-routine specimens to Pathologist Assistants for review.

Prepare tissue samples for histologic processing using standard dissection and trimming techniques.

Maintain compliance with corporate, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations, ensuring quality control and quality assurance standards are met.

Complete all associated documentation, logs, and grossing reports accurately and on time.

Maintain a clean, sterile, and organized workstation, following all laboratory safety and infection control procedures.

Communicate effectively with pathologists, histotechnicians, and supervisors regarding specimen handling or problem resolution.

Identify and troubleshoot issues that may affect test performance or result accuracy and report immediately to laboratory leadership.

May assist in basic histology functions (embedding, microtomy, staining) if qualified under corporate SOP.

Support continuous improvement by following standard operating procedures and participating in laboratory quality initiatives.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or laboratory manager.
