Duration: 3+ Months (Possible Extension)
 
Reports To: Laboratory Supervisor / Senior Technologist
 
Job Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing high-complexity laboratory testing, analyzing specimens, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. The role requires proficiency in laboratory procedures, quality control, and reporting results in a timely and accurate manner.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and reporting of patient results.
  • Maintain records for proficiency testing and patient specimen analyses.
  • Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures and review/release results.
  • Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and internal safety guidelines.
  • Maintain and document all quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) activities, including instrument calibration and maintenance.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct problems that may affect test performance; escalate issues to supervisor when necessary.
  • Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Report critical or STAT results to clients following departmental procedures.
  • Answer questions from clients or lab personnel as needed.
  • Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.
  • Ensure reagents and test kits are monitored for receipt, expiration, and usage.
  • Participate in training on new procedures and attend department/educational meetings.
  • Participate in safety training and understand safety manual and equipment locations.
  • Support inspections by government or regulatory agencies when required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Required Knowledge & Skills:
  • Solid understanding of laboratory testing principles and procedures.
  • Proficiency in multiple computer systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Knowledge of QC and QA processes across all areas of the laboratory.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple procedures simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills for interaction with clients and other departments.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
 
Education & Certification:
  • Preferred: BS in Medical Technology.
  • Acceptable alternatives: BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, Associates degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
  • Certification: Must possess or be eligible for national certification as MT / MLT from a recognized organization (ASCP or AMT).
  • Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF. U.S.-educated candidates must provide original transcripts.
 
Experience:
  • Minimum 1 year clinical laboratory experience in high-complexity testing (preferred for BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology).
  • Experience in multiple laboratory areas and knowledge of laboratory operations and regulations.
  • National and state licensure as required.
 
Special Requirements:
  • Ability to establish priorities and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to interact effectively with other departments.
  • Client-facing skills as needed.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.
