The Senior Database Administrator (Epic Operational DBA) plays a critical role in ensuring the performance, reliability, and security of the Epic Operational Database (ODB) environment, including production, development, test, and training systems. This role works closely with Epic analysts, system administrators, and infrastructure teams to support and maintain the Intersystems Iris database core to the Epic platform. The position includes on-call responsibilities and involvement in strategic initiatives, upgrades, and special updates across the Epic landscape.

• Develop and maintain blueprints and long-term strategies for data architecture across Epic environments.

• Translate business and clinical requirements into scalable, resilient database solutions.

• Monitor and maintain Epic Operational Databases across all environments.

• Lead and coordinate Epic upgrades and Special Updates, ensuring minimal disruption.

• Manage technical project components and delegate operational tasks while maintaining strategic oversight.

• Establish and enforce technical standards, documentation, and procedures for database operations.

• Plan and coordinate Epic environment upgrades, including timelines and sequencing.

• Provide guidance and mentorship to other DBAs and systems administrators within Epic and client systems.

• Serve as a technical lead for projects and participate in enterprise-level discussions on database architecture and system optimization.

• Leads others performing similar work (non-supervisory).

• Interfaces with internal/external customers via phone and in person.

• Collaborates with healthcare professionals, IT teams, and senior leadership (Director level and above).

• Minimum: High School Diploma or GED

• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or a related field

• Minimum 8 years of relevant IT experience, including:

  • At least 5 years working with Intersystems Iris, Epic Systems, and Linux operating systems.

• Expert-level data architecture and enterprise database deployment experience.

• Proficiency in Epic ODB tools/utilities such as:

  • Epic (Perl) admin scripts, Instaserver, RedAlert, Kuiper, System Pulse, certmgr

• Strong understanding of Unix/Linux file structures, file/data management, and shell scripting.

• Knowledge of:

  • Storage protocols and tools

  • Backup and restoration strategies

  • Network services (TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing)

• Experience with High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) design and support.

• Demonstrated leadership in conducting Epic upgrades and managing enterprise IT teams.

• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Ability to present technical concepts to stakeholders at varying levels.

• Epic Operational Database Administrator (ODBA) certification
  (Verification will be conducted via Epic Support during the selection process)

• Any additional Epic certifications (not required but beneficial)

• Advanced Linux OS experience is highly desirable

• Broader knowledge of Epic systems, beyond ODB, is a plus
