Job Title: Coder Inpatient II - Remote
Location: Milwaukee, WI, 53226 (100% Remote)
Duration: 6 + Months (Potential to Extend)
Shift: 1st Shift
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Flexible schedule. No weekends, no holidays, no on-call.
Required Skills & Experience
- A minimum of one (1) year of recent experience at an academic medical center inpatient coding.
OR - Three (3) years of recent hospital inpatient coding experience.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience as an inpatient coder at an academic facility.
- Coding Certificate Program Completion or Associate Degree in HIM or equivalent – Required.
- Bachelor’s degree in HIM or equivalent – Preferred.
- Certified RHIA, RHIT, or CCS – Required.
- Remote, advanced inpatient coding position functioning under general supervision with independent decision-making.
- Correctly assign ICD diagnosis and procedure codes and MS-DRGs for inpatient hospital services at an academic, Level I Trauma Center.
- Code a variety of medical and surgical specialties including Neurology, Oncology, Urology, Transplant, OB/Newborn, Orthopedics, Cardiology, and Critical Care (including complex trauma and acutely ill patients).
- Communicate with care providers as necessary, primarily via the electronic query process.
- Partner with clinical documentation improvement specialists to ensure complete and accurate medical record documentation for appropriate DRG assignment.
- Resolve problems and make independent decisions while applying all departmental coding quality guidelines.
- Maintain productivity and accuracy standards (95% overall accuracy rate).
- Accurately assign DRGs, diagnosis, procedure codes, and Present on Admission (POA) indicators.
- Write physician queries independently with minimal assistance from coordinators.
- Maintain standard productive percent, code mortality and rehab cases accurately and timely, participate in denials/rebuttals for insurance, and other projects as assigned.
- Demonstrate adaptability, effective communication, and teamwork in a remote environment.
