Job Summary:
- The Design Engineer will support the North Anna Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) project, a long-term initiative aimed at extending the plant’s operational life to 80 years through major system upgrades and infrastructure modernization. This role is responsible for developing safe, compliant, and high-quality civil/structural design solutions for nuclear facilities, working closely with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform civil and structural design and analysis for steel and concrete structures, including pipe and conduit supports, junction box supports, foundations, and equipment mounting systems.
- Apply engineering theories, principles, and industry best practices to develop compliant and constructible design solutions.
- Conduct seismic analysis and design for mounting components and equipment in accordance with nuclear and industrial standards.
- Interpret and apply applicable codes, standards, and regulations (ACI, ASCE, ASME, and nuclear-specific requirements).
- Prepare engineering calculations, design packages, drawings, and technical documentation with a high level of accuracy and rigor.
- Support configuration management and design change processes within a regulated nuclear environment.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and regulatory teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Identify design risks, propose improvements, and support field implementation and constructability reviews.
- Utilize engineering software tools (e.g., Excel, Mathcad, MATLAB, or similar) to perform calculations and analysis.
Top 3 Required Technical Skills
- Experience in the design of steel and concrete structures or components (pipe and conduit supports, junction box supports, foundations, etc.).
- Familiarity with industrial standards such as ACI, ASCE, and ASME codes, including lifting and rigging requirements.
- Experience with seismic analysis and design for equipment and component mounting systems.
Soft Skills & Competencies:
- Strong collaboration and cross-discipline communication skills to work effectively with mechanical, electrical, and regulatory teams.
- Adaptability and problem-solving skills to manage evolving project requirements, legacy infrastructure constraints, and regulatory changes.
- High attention to detail and documentation rigor to meet nuclear safety, quality, and compliance standards.
- Initiative and ownership mindset with the ability to proactively identify issues and drive tasks to completion.
- Effective stakeholder engagement, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and support field teams.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Experience with nuclear standard design processes and/or design change qualifications.
- Experience serving as a Responsible Engineer at a nuclear facility.
- Hands-on experience with engineering analysis software such as Mathcad, GTSTRUDL, STAAD, or ANSYS.
- Experience with Finite Element Modeling (FEM).
Preferred Background:
- Prior experience within the nuclear industry is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (Required).
- 2–5 years of professional engineering experience in civil/structural design, preferably within regulated or industrial environments.
