Job Summary


The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides essential operational support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role involves accurate data entry, specimen handling, laboratory support functions, and compliance with quality and safety standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, organized, and capable of working in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining high levels of accuracy and efficiency.



Key Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen processing tasks including accessioning (A-station), presorting, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and specimen distribution to laboratory departments.
  • Accurately enter and manage laboratory data with a minimum typing speed of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Ensure specimens are processed accurately, efficiently, and within established turnaround times.
  • Learn and apply laboratory procedures, specimen requirements, and compliance regulations related to test ordering.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards in a high-volume production environment.
  • Follow all laboratory safety, biohazard, and compliance protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changing priorities, procedures, and customer demands.
  • Support departmental staffing needs, including availability for night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call assignments as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work safely in a biohazard environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous laboratory, hospital, or specimen processing experience.
  • Medical background or familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Experience in a production or high-volume processing environment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and specimen handling.
