Specimen Technician - 3rd Shift
Job Title: Specimen Technician - 3rd Shift
Job Location: Gaithersburg, MD 20877
Duration: 3 months (temp-to-hire)
Shift: 12:00 AM to 8:30 AM, Tuesday through Saturday, with a rotating Sunday.
Pay Rate: $24.14/hr. on W2
Position Summary:
The Specimen Processing Technician I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This role requires a strong data entry background. The position involves handling, processing, and preparing laboratory specimens with accuracy, confidence, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Functions performed include A-station operations, presorting, specimen pickup and delivery to the laboratory, imaging or microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All tasks must be completed accurately and within required timeframes. The technician must learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients. The role also requires knowledge of compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change frequently.
Work Environment:
This is a production-based environment with a strong focus on productivity, quality standards, and turnaround times. The role involves working in a biohazard environment while following strict safety protocols. The technician must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Flexibility is required, as work schedules may include night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call duties.
Required Skills:
The position requires the ability to perform data entry at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to change are essential. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are required to work with all levels of staff. The employee must maintain a clean work area and follow all safety and compliance policies.
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
No prior experience is required. However, previous laboratory experience, medical background, or familiarity with medical terminology is preferred. Experience in a hospital laboratory or production environment is considered an advantage.
