Job Description
The Phlebotomist I / Patient Services Representative I (PSR I) serves as the primary point of contact for patients, representing the organization with professionalism, empathy, and expertise. This role requires drawing highquality blood samples and preparing specimens for laboratory testing while strictly adhering to established procedures and safety standards.
The Phlebotomist I must create an environment of trust and confidence by clearly explaining procedures and ensuring each collection is performed skillfully, accurately, and safely. The position requires strong technical ability, excellent patient interaction skills, and a commitment to confidentiality, accuracy, and process excellence.
Under the supervision of the Area Supervisor, the Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing daily duties efficiently, maintaining a professional workspace, and demonstrating organizational commitment and leadership behaviors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and timely specimen collection and processing for both forensic and clinical purposes.
- Draw blood specimens from a high volume of patients, including pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
- Handle difficult draws with expertise and confidence.
- Prepare, label, and process specimens according to established protocols.
- Maintain accurate documentation, logs, and records.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and professional working environment.
- Provide exceptional customer service to patients, clients, and the public.
- Explain procedures to patients and create a comfortable, trust-filled environment.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while ensuring accuracy and quality.
- Follow all HIPAA guidelines and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Support operational needs including weekends, holidays, on-call rotation, and overtime when required.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Excellent phlebotomy skills, including experience with:
- Pediatric patients
- Geriatric patients
- Difficult draws
- Strong specimen processing abilities.
- Ability to deliver errorfree work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining workflow efficiency.
- Experience with reference laboratories such as LabCorp, CPL, PathGroup, etc.
- Proficient in keyboarding and data entry.
Education Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Medical training preferred (Medical Assistant, Paramedic, etc.).
- Phlebotomy certification preferred
- Required in: California, Nevada, Washington
Experience
- Minimum 6 months of phlebotomy experience required.
- 3+ years phlebotomy experience highly preferred.
- Experience working in retail or service customer environments preferred.
- Reference lab experience strongly preferred.
Additional Details
- Full-time position: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Must be comfortable handling high patient volumes.
- Role requires strong processing skills and multitasking ability.
