Job Title: Lab Assistant
Location: Irving, TX 75063
Duration: 5+ Months (Possibility of Extension)

Shift: First Shift / Central
Schedule: Wednesday–Sunday
 
Position Summary:
The Lab Assistant performs a variety of routine laboratory support tasks with accuracy and precision to assist laboratory professionals and ensure smooth daily operations. This role is responsible for specimen handling, basic equipment maintenance, data documentation, workstation preparation, and adherence to safety and quality protocols.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Specimen Handling & Processing:


  • Receive, sort, and correctly identify incoming specimens.
  • Prepare specimens for testing, including building worklists, aliquoting into sample cups, and checking for clots or fibrin.
  • Perform centrifugation, inoculation, slide preparation, and specimen labeling.
  • Retrieve, store, and track specimens using proper procedures.
  • Locate missing or pending samples and resolve pending lists.
 
Laboratory Operations & Equipment:
  • Perform routine maintenance on designated laboratory instruments.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, or media as required.
  • Change gas cylinders and ensure proper equipment functionality.
  • Conduct weekly radioactive wipe tests (if applicable).
  • Maintain organized and updated departmental files and logs.
 
Quality Assurance & Compliance:
  • Carry out QA/QC duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.
  • Record data such as temperature logs and maintenance entries.
  • Follow all PPE, biosafety, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Decontaminate and disinfect work areas according to protocols.
  • Properly dispose of biohazardous materials following safety standards.
 
Technology & Documentation:
  • Utilize the laboratory information system (LIS) and personal computers for data entry, specimen tracking, and workflow management.
  • Complete all required training modules and competency assessments.
 
Education & Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant training preferred but not required.
  • Coursework in math or science is highly beneficial.
 
Required Skills:
  • Strong ability to learn and retain technical information.
  • Excellent task prioritization and multitasking skills for efficient workstation management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate courteously with coworkers, internal teams, and external customers.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in handling specimens and completing documentation.
