Job Title: Specimen Technician
Location: Tampa, FL
Duration: 3+ Months (Possible Extension)

Shift: Monday – Friday, 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM EST – 3rd Shift
 
Position Overview:


  • The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for performing essential support functions within the Specimen Processing Department.
  • This role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, fast-paced production environment.
  • The SPT I ensures accurate and timely processing of laboratory specimens to meet quality and customer satisfaction standards.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform specimen processing duties including:
    • A-station functions.
    • Presort operations.
    • Pickup & delivery of processed specimens.
    • Imaging/microfilming.
    • Centrifugation and aliquoting.
  • Enter specimen and test order information with a minimum of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Maintain accuracy, organization, and timely workflow while managing complex specimen requirements.
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and practice proper handling of biohazardous materials.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and staff at all levels.
  • Adapt to frequent procedural or workload changes; demonstrate strong flexibility.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area.
  • Manage repetitive tasks in a heavy production environment.
 
Work Environment & Expectations:
  • Production-driven department focused on meeting quality and productivity goals.
  • Requires extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Exposure to biohazard materials; PPE required (lab coat, gloves, mask, goggles, etc.).
  • Must be able to work scheduled hours consistently, arrive on time, and remain for the full shift.
  • Excessive absenteeism or tardiness is not tolerated.
  • Weekend, holiday, overtime, or on-call shifts may be required based on staffing needs.
 
Education & Experience:
  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferred Knowledge & Skills:
    • Basic computer skills required.
    • Knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing preferred.
    • Medical background or familiarity with medical terminology is a plus.
    • Prior laboratory experience, hospital lab experience, or production environment experience preferred but not required.
 
Additional Requirements:
  • Must have reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license.
 
Shift Details:
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday.
  • Hours: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM EST.
  • Must be available for the entire shift without schedule conflicts.
