Salary Range: $140,000 - $140,689/year
 
Scheduled Notes:
  • Chemistry Lab Supervisory Experience is required
  • Licensed/qualified CLT •
  • + 4 years of relevant lab experience
  • Bachelor’s in biology, chemistry, medical technology, pr physical sciences
  • At least 5 years’ experience in similar laboratory including supervisory experience.
  • 3 years supervisory/ or management experience preferred
  • 2 years’ experience overseeing lab operations.
 
Purpose Of Position:
  • The Laboratory Technical Director, together with the Deputy Directors, Medical Director and Administrative Director, forms the leadership team for the Laboratory Department and is directly responsible for the overall Laboratory Operations and Performance Improvement Program.
 
Areas of responsibilities:
  • Under the general supervision of the Director of Pathology and the Administrator of Laboratory Services, provides on-site operational oversight of any of the areas of the laboratory. Exercises oversight of the operations and technical testing responsibility across laboratory services ensuring the delivery of patient-centered, cost-effective quality care and a culture of safety across the continuum of care.
 
Summary of duties and responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership to the laboratory staff; exercises responsibility for the operations of the area of assignment, in accordance with NYS CLEP, CAP and TJC standards.
  • Participates in the quality management system by ensuring conformance to requirements described in the Quality Plan.
  • Ensures laboratory is enrolled in the appropriate proficiency programs.
  • Provides effective and efficient administrative direction and management of staff. Supervises the staff to determine proficiency in their performance of laboratory testing.
  • Develops and maintains a daily staffing schedule to provide coverage during the hours of operation. Monitors staff rotation to enable efficient performance in all areas in the face of staffing shortages. Implements cross-training in the various areas of the laboratory, whenever possible. Ensures training and competence assessment of all staff.
  • Ensures training and competence assessment of all staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Provides leadership to the laboratory staff in the area of implementation and use of the computerized services utilized throughout the laboratory to include the Laboratory Information System, and EPIC. Upon implementation, performs validations, controls security, troubleshoots and trains the staff as needed.
  • Provides leadership to the laboratory staff in the area of financial management of the laboratory (e.g. processes purchasing requests, requests for payment and management of purchase requisitions).
  • Ensures that all contracts with outside vendors meet the needs of all hospital patients.
  • Provides support to the clinicians regarding the tests, interpretation of results and services provided.
  • Monitors laboratory work to ensure medically reliable data are generated; ensures that the laboratory section participates in monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of services rendered (within the context of the Quality Plan).
  • Ensures that the laboratory is enrolled and complies with all requirements of the NYS CLEP and CAP Proficiency Test Programs for all laboratory testing performed. Monitors the timely handling and reporting of all proficiency testing surveys performed in the lab.
  • Implements and maintains the quality control program for all laboratory testing.
  • Writes, updates and reviews laboratory technical procedures, quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance procedures on behalf of the Director and ensures their approval by the same. Ensures that an approved and current procedure manual is available to all staff.
  • Evaluates, purchases, validates and implements new instruments and supplies after consultation with and approval by the Director of Laboratories and the Director of Laboratory Administration.
  • Reviews present functions of the area and revises and optimizes existing methodologies and functions in consultation with the Director of Laboratories and the Laboratory Administrator to better meet the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Maintains good communication within all divisions of the Pathology Department and meets personnel needs within the areas of the incumbent’s authority.
  • Oversees and coordinates continuing education opportunities (e.g., CP resident presentations, CE workshops) for the area of assignment. Adheres to all organizational standards for annual education, assessments, and in-services.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations when interacting with staff, patients and visitors by promoting teamwork, efficiency and quality in the provision of patient care.
  • Monitors the time records of staff within the incumbent’s area of authority, institutes corrective action when necessary.
  • Monitors all testing performed for accuracy and acceptable turnaround time.
  • Monitors quality control results for completeness and follow up as required.
  • Monitors preventive maintenance schedules of all laboratory equipment.
  • Performs patient specimen processing and clinical testing at workstations where help Is required (i.e., unusually heavy workload, instrument breakdown, or staff shortage).
  • Understands and practices the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Supervises all area supervisors, and other technologists, technicians, aides, and support staff.
  • Performs administrative tasks and other related tasks required by the Director of Pathology and the Director of Laboratory Administration and the Director of the Blood Bank, as needed.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in area of specialty.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
 
Certification(s)/license(s):
  • Must have a NYSED license as a clinical laboratory technologist.
  • Candidates must also meet one of the qualifications requirements of a laboratory supervisor, as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law
 
Required Skills:
  • Working knowledge of ISO standards, and GLP
  • 5 years laboratory experience required
  • 3 years of supervisory and/or management experience preferred
  • Cerner, EPIC, WELLSKy,  Immunolink, EP evaluator, Microsoft Office, WAM
 
Required Experience:
  • Two (2) years of experience overseeing laboratory operations, creating and establishing laboratory programs and reviewing and interpreting safety data, in a hospital or health care setting; and
  • Successful completion client Supervisor Development Program within three (3) months of appointment or promotion.
