Work Schedule:
- Generally, 40+ hours per week, Monday–Friday, but must be flexible
- Overtime, on-call, and weekend work may be required at times to support test schedules
Job Description:
Summary:
- The successful applicant will combine hands-on experience with scientific principles to provide technical support to engineers involved in testing, research, development, and manufacturing of materials such as glass, refractory, ceramics, metals, and polymers.
- This position will focus on conducting analysis using optical methods and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), along with hands-on sample preparation in a laboratory environment.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Sample preparation of glass and refractory materials, including cutting, mounting, epoxying, grinding, and polishing
- Analyze and image prepared samples using optical methods, including stereomicroscopy and polarized light microscopy
- Conduct imaging and chemical analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX)
- Prepare reports and compile data for Geologists and Engineering staff
- Support maintenance of lab operations and supplies
Required Education & Experience
- AAS in Engineering Technology or related scientific field
- 2+ years of experience in a technician role or similar role
- Experience conducting instrumental analysis with microProducts or microprobes
Required Skills:
- Experience operating electron microProducts or microprobes or experience performing other analytical (quantitative or semi-quantitative) chemistry techniques
- Knowledge of safety systems as they relate to machine work, furnace work, and material handling
- Ability to gather information independently using established and defined procedures and collaborate to solve more complex problems
- Good written and oral communication skills
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal; domestic and/or international travel may occasionally be required but would be the exception
