Specimen Technician
Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I)
Tampa, FL | Night Shift: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM (Weekdays)
Duration: 4 months +, temp to hire
40 hours/week | Must be available for holidays, weekends, and overtime as needed
Position Summary:
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) plays a vital support role in the Specimen Processing Department. The primary responsibilities include handling laboratory specimens with precision and accuracy, performing data entry, and ensuring that samples are processed in a timely and compliant manner. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the flexibility to adapt to shifting daily demands in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen intake, presort, A-station operations, centrifugation, aliquoting, and delivery to the laboratory.
- Image/microfilm specimens and prepare them for processing.
- Enter high volumes of data accurately (minimum 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour).
- Adhere to all safety, compliance, and quality control protocols.
- Maintain clean and organized workstations and follow all biohazard safety procedures.
- Communicate effectively with internal staff and departments.
- Follow standard operating procedures and adapt to frequent changes in test regulations and workflows.
- Wear appropriate PPE when handling specimens (lab coat, gloves, mask, goggles, etc.).
Requirements:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: No prior lab experience required; previous experience in a medical, laboratory, or production environment preferred.

Skills:
- Strong data entry skills and familiarity with basic computer operations.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English (fluency required).
- Medical terminology knowledge is a plus.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and task repetition tolerance.
Work Conditions:
- Fast-paced, high-production laboratory environment.
- Requires reliable transportation — public transit, rideshare, or taxi options are not considered reliable.
- Attendance and punctuality are critical
- Must be able to work the full scheduled shift, including potential weekends and holidays.
Additional Information:
- Department operates under strict productivity and quality standards.
- Position is considered critical to ensuring accuracy and timeliness of lab testing and client satisfaction.
- Training and support will be provided, but flexibility and quick learning are essential.
