Specimen Technician

Job Summary
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely handling of all laboratory specimens. This role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a production-based, biohazard environment while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
The SPT I contributes directly to customer satisfaction and laboratory quality assurance by properly managing specimens from receipt to delivery.
Key Responsibilities

Perform general specimen processing tasks, including presort, A-station, pickup, delivery, centrifugation, aliquoting, and imaging/microfilming.

Enter and verify specimen data accurately at a minimum of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.

Ensure specimens are correctly labeled, stored, and transported to appropriate laboratory sections.

Follow all departmental productivity and quality standards.

Maintain a neat, clean, and organized workspace while practicing biohazard safety protocols.

Learn and understand specimen types and test requirements ordered by clients.

Stay current on compliance regulations related to specimen handling and test ordering.

Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to daily changes and shifting priorities.

Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent – Required
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
-
Basic computer literacy and familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).

Medical or laboratory background with knowledge of medical terminology – Preferred.

Previous experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory – Preferred.

Experience working in a production or high-volume environment – Preferred.
Work Environment

Production-based laboratory with a focus on productivity, accuracy, and turnaround times.

Exposure to biohazard materials with required safety and compliance protocols.

Night shift role (3rd shift) with required availability for weekends, holidays, and overtime.
