Duration: 12 Months (Extension Possible)
Position Description:
The Data Processing Specialist supports the Viral Hepatitis Program by accurately processing and maintaining hepatitis surveillance data in the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) Based System (NBS). The role applies CDC/CSTE case definitions, identifies reportable case types, performs data cleaning and quality assurance, and collaborates with program and surveillance staff to support data integrity and public health reporting.
Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; data entry or data systems experience and medical or public health knowledge preferred.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Ability to accurately enter and maintain confidential health data with strong attention to detail. Ability to follow detailed procedures and meet established data quality and performance standards. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively. Proficiency with basic computer applications and data systems.
Travel: Limited; required in-person meetings approximately 2 to 4 times per year
Organization Description:
The position is located in the Tennessee Department of Health, Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness. TDH staff in the Viral Hepatitis Program work to increase access to diagnosis and treatment to reduce viral hepatitis infection, morbidity, and mortality rates in Tennessee. This includes addressing health disparities related to viral hepatitis. TDH activities in support of this effort include: 1) conducting disease surveillance and outbreak planning, early detection, and rapid response; 2) improving access to prevention, testing, and treatment; and 3) building partnerships and establishing policies to address the viral hepatitis epidemic in Tennessee.

- Process and enter hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) laboratory and case data in NBS (surveillance system)
- Review and manage assigned surveillance and document review queues
- Apply CDC/CSTE case definitions to determine case status
- Identify acute, reinfection, perinatal, infant, and fetal death cases
- Perform routine data cleaning and quality assurance
- Process paper, electronic, and orphaned laboratory reports
- Resolve data discrepancies and incomplete records
- Coordinate medical record requests as assigned
- Communicate data issues and notable findings to the team leader
- Participate in required meetings, training, and team activities
