Job Title: Packaging Engineer
Location: Allentown, PA 18106
Duration: 6 months
Shift time: Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.
Job Description
What will you do?
The Packaging Process Engineer plays a critical, hands-on role in supporting Engineering and Operations within a GMP-regulated pharmaceutical packaging environment. This position is heavily focused on packaging equipment performance, integration, and optimization across labeling, cartoning, serialization, and syringe assembly operations. The engineer will work directly on the production floor to troubleshoot equipment, improve line efficiency, and support new product introductions.
This is a client-facing role with responsibility to lead Commercial Technology Transfer activities and must be 100% present, on-site, at the Allentown facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Troubleshoot and optimize packaging equipment including labeling systems (vial and syringe), cartoners, serialization systems, and assembly equipment
Lead packaging line setup, changeovers, and carton size evaluations to improve throughput and reduce waste
Drive improvements in line performance (OEE), equipment reliability, and operational efficiency
Partner with OEMs and vendors to resolve mechanical, controls, and integration issues
Evaluate and implement carton and label artwork changes, ensuring compatibility with equipment and regulatory requirements
Support capital equipment projects including specification development, vendor selection, FAT/SAT, and commissioning with a focus on equipment performance
Lead and support packaging-related technology transfers for new and existing client products
Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, and clients to resolve packaging challenges and improve workflows
Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on packaging line efficiency, quality, and cost reduction
Note: This is not a validation-focused role. Candidates must have significant hands-on experience with packaging equipment and line operations rather than primarily documentation or compliance-based roles.
How will you get here?
Applicants should possess at least 310 years of engineering experience in a cGMP-controlled environment, with a strong preference for pharmaceutical or medical device packaging operations.
Required Experience:
Hands-on experience with pharmaceutical or medical device packaging equipment, including:
oLabeling systems (print & apply, wrap labeling, vision inspection systems)
oCartoning equipment (Clienttal/vertical cartoners, carton forming and closure)
oSerialization and aggregation systems (Track & Trace)
oSyringe assembly and secondary packaging operations
Proven experience troubleshooting high-speed automated packaging lines
Experience with packaging line integration and material flow optimization
Preferred Experience:
Experience with carton and label artwork, including dielines, barcode placement, and print tolerances
Familiarity with vision systems and inspection technologies
Experience working directly with OEMs and packaging equipment vendors
General Responsibilities:
Ensure full compliance with GMP standards, site safety practices, and company values (Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, Involvement)
Support multiple packaging projects and technology transfers simultaneously
Contribute to equipment qualification activities (URS, FAT/SAT, commissioning), with primary focus on equipment performance and integration
Assist in root cause investigations and implementation of corrective actions related to packaging equipment issues
Perform additional duties as needed to meet business and operational objectives
Education:
A four-year Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Packaging, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering or a related field is required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Strong hands-on mechanical and troubleshooting skills with packaging equipment
Deep understanding of labeling, cartoning, and serialization processes in a regulated environment
Experience diagnosing issues related to label placement, adhesion, barcode readability, carton defects, and equipment jams
Understanding of how artwork and packaging materials impact equipment performance
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, SMED, and structured problem-solving methodologies
Ability to work effectively on the production floor and collaborate with cross-functional teams
Strong communication skills, including the ability to interface with clients and explain technical concepts
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word) for data analysis and reporting
